The Yoga of Entertainment: Higher Consciousness in Pop Culture

Considering that I’ve been a meditation teacher since the age of 20, a full-time life coach since 2001, a former columnist for the National Lampoon, a stand-up comic, an actor in a comedy group that I founded, a poet, a songwriter, and a movie and theater critic, it amazes me that I’ve written a dozen books before The Yoga of Entertainment: Higher Consciousness in Pop Culture. This volume reveals the higher consciousness depicted in popular culture art forms, many of which I’ve been passionately devoted to for most of my life. The book is divided into five different artistic categories: television, motion pictures, music, comedy, and comic books.

The 200-page book sells for $20 plus $3 for S&H. Through June 30, you can get it for $16 plus S&H. You can order the book by calling me at (845) 664-1883, or emailing me at Don’t purchase it on the website, as the shopping cart doesn’t have the discount built in.

Free Coaching

To celebrate May, the month of my birthday (the 22nd for those keeping score at home), I’m offering a complimentary half-hour coaching session for the first person who contacts me by phone (845-664-1883), or by email at who want to have some breakthroughs in his or her life. It’s my way of giving thanks for the great life that I’m blessed to live. There are only four restrictions, but please read them carefully:

1) You haven’t already received a free coaching session from me.

2) You’re not currently involved in a series of coaching sessions with me.

3) You book the session within three days of winning, so if you call or email, check my response and respond in time. If you forget to do this, someone on the waiting list will take your place, as happens from time to time.

4) You take the session before May 15.

Here is an affirmation from my series on procrastination, success, relationships, communication, and the inner journey, which are available in five ebooks and three CDs.

“My life is an unfolding adventure.”

Testimonial on Coaching

“Since doing success and money work with Cary my income has more than doubled, and it’s been a great adventure–playing in the greatest cities of the world. I’m 60 now, and that’s old in the music business, but I’m doing what I love, getting paid really well and seeing the whole world. Only a handful of guys are privileged enough to be able to do that.

“When I started working with Cary in 1990, I often commuted 2 hours to Manhattan doing session work, jingles and film music. In 1992, I started performing with Steeley Dan and became music director for his concert tours in ’93. Two years later I became the keyboardist for Art Garfunkel’s tours. Prior to working with these bands the number of people I’d performed for live was in the low thousands. Now I’ve performed for more than four and a half million people. If I hadn’t done the work with Cary I might be selling washing machines today. I feel like Rip Van Winkle, waking up after 20 years of being totally asleep around money.”

The Poetry of TV Commercials

I was watching television last night and, during a break in my program, a commercial for the Volvo S90 appeared on the screen and then Josh Brolin, as the voiceover, began reciting lines from Walt Whitman’s great poem, “Song of the Open Road.”   I recognized it instantly because it’s my second favorite poem by my favorite poet, Walt Whitman. How expansive to hear these words for a car commercial.

“Afoot and light-hearted I take to the open road,

Healthy, free, the world before me,

The long brown path before me leading wherever I choose…

The east and the west are mine, the north and the south are mine.”

…All seems beautiful to me.”

What a great way to open the minds of TV viewers. I just thought it would be nice if Volvo had credited Whitman. April, after all, is National Poetry Month. Later that night, it was poetry all over again–not Whitman, but Dylan Thomas’ “Do Not Go Gentle into that Good night.” Big Pharma quoted the poet who inspired Robert Zimmerman to change his name to Bob Dylan.

“Do not go gentle into that good night, Old age should burn and rave at close of day; Rage, rage against the dying of the light…”

The one minute spot for the Americas Biopharmaceutical Companies went on:

“When an indomitable will to cure pushes researchers to find the unfindable and cure the incurable. Today’s breakthroughs become tomorrow’s medicines for all of us.” “Poets are the unacknowledged legislators of the world,” Percy Shelley wrote in his 1821 essay, “A Defence of Poetry.” It seems they’re becoming the unacknowledged pitchmen of advertising, too, as neither spot above credited the poet’s contribution to the commercial.

Neither did Waitrose, the British supermarket chain, which invoked Shelley’s good friend, John Keats, quoting at length his invocation of the Fall in his classic “Ode to Autumn.”

“Season of mists and mellow fruitfulness,

Close bosom-friend of the maturing sun;

Conspiring with him how to load and bless

With fruit the vines that round the thatch-eves run;

To bend with apples the moss’d cottage-trees,

And fill all fruit with ripeness to the core;

…And still more, later flowers for the bees,

Until they think warm days will never cease,”

Apple was more acknowledging when they quoted the entire poem “Human Family,” by Maya Angelou. They had her read it in its entirety. Her words have even greater relevance to us now in these divided times.

“I note the obvious differences in the human family. Some of us are serious, some thrive on comedy. Some declare their lives are lived as true profundity, and others claim they really live the real reality. The variety of our skin tones can confuse, bemuse, delight, brown and pink and beige and purple, tan and blue and white. I’ve sailed upon the seven seas and stopped in every land, I’ve seen the wonders of the world not yet one common man. I know ten thousand women called Jane and Mary Jane, but I’ve not seen any two who really were the same. Mirror twins are different although their features jibe, and lovers think quite different thoughts while lying side by side. We love and lose in China, we weep on England’s moors, and laugh and moan in Guinea, and thrive on Spanish shores. We seek success in Finland, are born and die in Maine. In minor ways we differ, in major we’re the same. I note the obvious differences between each sort and type, but we are more alike, my friends, than we are unalike. We are more alike, my friends, than we are unalike. We are more alike, my friends, than we are unalike.”

The one-minute ad ends with the words, “All images shot on iPhone.”

Shortly before his death, William Burroughs pitched for Nike. Posthumously, Shakespeare has been used by Coca-Cola, Marlboro, Mercedes-Benz, Levis, Stella Artois and Red Bull. All the marketing world is indeed a stage. F. Scott Fitzgerald was used by Calvin Klein for his Obsession perfume, presumably to show you how tender is the night with a dash of just the right scent.   Jack Kerouac was employed by the Gap, who are certainly no dharma bums.

Higher Self Healing Meditation

I’m proud to announce the development of a new meditation training that’s been marinating in the quietest levels of consciousness deep within my soul for a number of years. Its name is Higher Self Healing Meditation, and it’s as effortless as Transcendental Meditation (TM) that Maharishi Mahesh Yogi trained me to teach when I was 20 years old.

Some years back, the movement that teaches the late Maharishi’s system of TM significantly changed the requirements for those who had been teaching to continue to do so. As a result, thousands of others, including myself, no longer instruct that method. But understanding the mechanics of how the mind transcends in meditation after teaching meditation to so many hundreds of people from southern California and Western Europe to the Caribbean and many points in between-as well as training dozens of teachers of Transcendental Meditation–I’ve developed a system of meditation that’s as effective as TM, as easy as TM, and available at one third the price that it costs to learn TM.

Have you thought about incorporating a daily stress-management system to:

  • release deep-rooted tension,
  • increase energy,
  • stimulate creativity,
  • enliven happiness, and
  • enable you to contact the inexhaustible reservoir of creativity and intelligence deep within you at the transcendental level of Being?

If so, let me know, and I can explain how easy it is to learn over the course of five hours in three consecutive days. You can reach me by email at or by phone at (845) 679-5526.

Blog Cabin

I have my site set up properly, and I’ve begun to write regularly. If you would like to have my blog entries emailed to you, there’s a place on my website where you can enter your email address:

Referral Fees

When I ran my own marketing/PR firm, I loved thanking anyone who referred a new client to me, by sending a check for 10 percent of the fees generated. I have a similar policy as a life coach, a meditation teacher, and the writer of books for others. If you inspire someone to become a client of mine for coaching or book writing, or a meditation student, you’ll receive 10 percent of the fee that that person begins with me at. That could easily mean a check for you of $105 or $65 for coaching, for $50 for meditation, and hundreds of dollars for book publishing. It’s my way of saying, “thanks.” My thought is simple–who couldn’t use a piece of unexpected income?

Advanced Meditation Technique Available

The basic course in Higher Self Healing Meditation is easy to learn and even easier to practice; so, too, are advanced techniques, which you can learn, that accelerate your practice. The second technique, for example, expands the benefits of your daily meditation by opening awareness to the most refined levels of inner silence. Think of it as a fertilizer to speed up your growth. This second technique also improves the mind’s ability to cognize thought at more refined levels so that action can be strengthened, increasing your ability to achieve your goals, and thereby grow in fulfillment. This happens naturally and leads to improvements in all areas of life–physical, mental, and spiritual.

Once you’ve practiced meditation for at least a year, you’re ready to learn your next technique. The cost for this advanced method is half of the cost of the first: $250. What’s more, it can also be learned via Skype and a webcam.

If you’d like to enjoy the benefits that the second technique provides, email me at or call (845) 664-1883.

Testimonial on the 2nd Technique

“The advanced technique has brought me into deeper and more profound experiences where I become much more aware of colors that tie into my chakras and become aware of a state of consciousness where I have no thoughts for extended periods along with no mantra and I am just aware of feelings of bliss and joy tied into the colors expanding into my awareness.”

Living Room Lectures

Sometimes the environment we hear something in can make the world of difference with regard to how we react to it. Meditation is no different. Toward that end, I enjoy giving free talks on meditation in the living rooms of meditators. If you’d like to share the benefits you’re enjoying from meditation with your family, friends, and co-workers, let me know and I’d be happy to set up an hour-long introduction to the benefits of meditation and explain to those present how it works and how it differs from other programs of personal growth. To set up a living room lecture, just give me a call at (845) 664-1883.

Meditation Retreats

A number of meditators have expressed interest in deepening their experience with meditation. Toward that end, I created a one-day retreat called

“A Retreat into Peace, an Advance in Knowledge.”

It provides a day of profound rest, renewal, and healing, in which you get a chance to take another big step toward Enlightenment. Instead of your usual twice-a-day daily meditations, you’ll get to meditate eight times in a safe and appropriate environment. The deeper experience is complemented by profound knowledge through videos and discussion. What follows is a quote from a meditator who’s hosted many such retreats.

“I have found that meditation reduces my stress, and increases my energy, focus, and capacity for joy. Attending a full-day meditation retreat is always a day of profound rest and renewal. It is hard to describe the feelings of deep peace and contentment that follow the experience. Thank you Cary for making it all possible.”

The Principle of the Second Element:

                 A Transcendental Solution to Problems

Life has no shortages of problems. Yet Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, with whom I learned how to teach meditation, stated that, “The answer to every problem is that there is no problem. Let a man perceive this truth and he is without problems.” This is radical statement that flies in the face of everything you know about problems.

Government committees study problems. The problem with studying problems, as the Law of Attraction knows, is that you get more problems. So, instead of analyzing problems we should focus on expanded solutions.

Governmental solutions typically throw money at problems instead of finding solutions at a deeper level. When trying to lift people out of poverty they often recommend painting the buildings in poor neighborhoods, but invariably overlook holistic solutions, because their consciousness doesn’t think holistically. They don’t respond to comprehensive programs that raise the consciousness of poor people. Politicians usually ignore the wisdom of Einstein, who said, “Existing problems cannot be solved at the same level of consciousness that created them.”

Trees suffering from withered bark, leaves, and fruit don’t become healthy by watering each damaged item. They’re solved by watering the root. In other words, the solution lay in a hidden area, invisible to the eye, beneath the earth.

Medical doctors often make the same error, treating colds, flues,  and viruses with antibiotics, but rarely treating underlying causes, such as  compromised immune systems, and lives that are out of balance.

Maharishi introduced a radical new idea: that solutions to many problems also rest in an area of life not visible to the naked eye. The hidden Transcendent is the root of your life. Contact with this second element, not typically considered when analyzing problems, brings freshness to your mind, relief from stress to your nervous system, and joy to your heart.

Maharishi recommended a one-word solution to our problems: “Nivartadhvam,” It’s Sanskrit for transcend or retire (from the gross physical level of your life) to the Transcendent Source, and then retire from that retiring by bringing your awareness back to the world you’re familiar with. The expansion of consciousness that comes from such short-term (20-minute) breaks from daily living gives you a fresh perspective, that’s much richer than fresh coats of paint.

People who smoke cigarettes attempt to wean themselves from this deadly addiction with products like Nicoderm, and people who use heroin are weaned with drugs like Methodone. Meditation, on the other hand, introduces a fresh way of seeing that inspires meditators to live healthier lives. Instead of having to try to quit smoking or drinking or drugging, for example, they often find that such unhealthy habits fall away by themselves.

Sometimes the meditator doesn’t even realize the habit is gone. In the early

days of Maharishi’s U.S. teaching, his TM technique was often called The

Great Automatic because meditators were automatically living healthier and

happier lives without even thinking about it. Now that’s a solution worth

looking at.

All New Transcendental Coaching Launched

As many of you know, two of the greatest passions in my career are teaching meditation and coaching. And now the two have come together in a brand new method. Let me explain.

The Higher Self Healing Meditation that I founded in 2010, after teaching Transcendental Meditation for decades and training dozens of its teachers, can give you the experience of the Transcendent, the inner Being within you. When you combine the experience of the Transcendent with an advanced form of coaching you get my newest offering–Transcendental Coaching.

What makes Transcendental Coaching unique is that it draws upon mankind’s ancient timeless wisdom–from the Hebrews, Jesus, Buddha, Lao Tzu, the Vedas of India, and the native Americans of our own continent–to help coach you into the life that you were truly born to live. It incorporates deep knowledge of the way that the Universe operates, so that your life can flow in tune with the Laws of Nature. Enjoy clarity for your mind, purity for your heart, prosperity for your net worth, and spirituality for your soul. It takes into account the knowledge of Karma, the knowledge of Dharma (action in accordance with Cosmic Law), the knowledge of clearly defined higher states of consciousness, and an understanding of the nature of Enlightenment itself. This helps bring your life increasingly in tune with Nature, and to live in freedom.

The result of this attunement is more frequent experience of synchronicities (being in the right place at the right time), less struggle, less resistance to the fulfillment of your desires, and an overall greater sense of your life as a delightful flow.

The prerequisites for Transcendental Coaching are the 3-day training in Higher Self Healing Meditation, and 10 hour-long coaching sessions.

Meditation Training Available by Skype & Webcam

When I taught Transcendental Meditation for several decades, I could only teach it in person. But since founding Higher Self Healing Meditation in 2010, I’m happy to say that the training is now available from a distance if you have a webcam on your computer. Let me know if you’d like to take advantage of this valuable stress-reducing method, even if you live far from my homes in upstate New York and south Florida.

Want to Make Money from Meditation?

When I ran my own marketing/PR firm, I loved thanking anyone who referred a new client to me, by sending a check for 10 percent of the fees generated. I have a similar policy as a meditation teacher. If you inspire someone to become my student, you’ll receive 10 percent of the course fee. That means a check for you of $50 for caring enough about the people in your life that you’d like them to live with more freedom from stress. It’s my way of saying, “thanks.” My thought is simple–who couldn’t use a piece of unexpected income?

I also give you 20 percent of the revenues for any meditation course that you produce or sponsor for me. Sponsoring means finding a time and space for the free introductory lecture and the three days of hour-and-a half classes-it could be your own living room, if you like-and it can also be held on the Internet as a webinar.   I would email you a flyer for the lecture, which you’d then email to the people in your life.   If five people learn to meditate, for example, you would enjoy $500 for your work.
